|Kashmir Peace Mission for Blair
- PM to fly to troubled region in diplomacy effort
TONY BLAIR is to fly out to India and Pakistan in a bid to help avert a war between the two nuclear powers.
The British Prime Minister is now well-versed in shuttle-diplomacy following his efforts for the war effort in Afghanistan and is expected to meet leaders of both India and Pakistan this week,
Blair is not thought likely to be able to offer any new peace plan, but will instead urge the two countries to re-start talks over the disputed border province of Kashmir that were abandoned last summer.
Authorities in Pakistan have arrested dozens of Islamic militants suspected of an attack on the Indian parliament in December, but New Delhi officials have said the purge does not go far enough.
The backdrop to the conflict rests on both countries' slide towards nationalism in recent years, with the Kashmir issue assuming huge symbolic importance.
