|Ronnie Biggs Wants to Come Home
- 'I'll give myself up,' says e-mail message to the Yard
RONNIE BIGGS wants to come back to England, at least according to an e-mail bearing the name of the Great Train Robber sent to New Scotland Yard from Rio de Janiero, Brazil.
A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: "We can confirm an e-mail has been received by Detective Chief Superintendent John Coles, head of the Metropolitan Police Serious and Organised Crime Group. It is from a man purporting to be Ronnie Biggs."
Reports suggest Biggs, or a very credible hoaxer, enclosed both a copy of his signature and thumbprint in the e-mail.
"I would like to give myself up to you," reads the e-mail. "I am prepared to be arrested when I arrive at Heathrow Airport and submit myself to the due process of the law."
Biggs has achieved mythical status in the UK, thanks to the audacity of the 1963 train robbery and his escape from Wandsworth Prison in 1965. Biggs has been holed up in Rio since 1970 but has recently suffered strokes, the most serious of which has left him unable to speak.
"I am a sick man," Biggs has told reporters by way of a hand written message. "My last wish is to walk into a Margate pub as an Englishman and buy a pint of bitter. I hope I live long enough to be able to do that."
