|Tube Uses Machine from Museum
- The stations are shabby but things are worse behind the scenes, says TV report
VISITORS to London and its citizens are often impressed with the city's heritage industry but few would credit that even the transport system has come, literally, straight out of a museum.
Such were the findings of former London Mayor candidate Susan Kramer who has made a TV programme about the dillapidated tube system. "Part of a machine which tracks where the trains are had to be obtained from a transport museum," Kramer revealed. "Other equipment was written off by the New York subway and often breaks down."
Kramer found the museum pieces in the control rool of busy Earl's Court station, but says that similarly ancient equipment can be found throughout the underground system. "People see the shabby stations but I don't think they realise that things are much more serious behind the scenes," Kramer said.
