|Breast Ban Hits Parliament|
- No milk for MPs babies in Commons
WOMEN Members of Parliament have been banned from breast feeding their babies in an extraordinary ruling straight out of the last century but one.
"I think this introduces unnecessary inflexibility into the House," said Labour MP Julia Drown, who had planned to feed her five month-old son Dexter on the famous old green benches of the Commons. "Breast feeding is usually very quiet."
The ruling is all the stranger in coming from woman Speaker of the House Betty Boothroyd, although she apparently took the anti-mum decision after advice from her deputy Sir Alan Haselhurst. Haselhurst said breast feeding falls under rules banning "the bringing of refreshments" into the key areas of the Houses of Parliament.
