|Second Channel Tunnel Planned
- But drivers face 25 year wait for road link
BRITAIN'S links with mainland Europe could be strengthened by a new channel tunnel if plans put forward by Eurotunnel yesterday to the governments of France come to fruition.
The new link proposed is a road tunnel running alongside Eurotunnel's existing rail one, but motorists excited at the prospect of scooting across to the continent need not get their driving gloves out just yet. The project won't take off until at least 2025, by which time the present link should reach capacity.
Eurotunnel have fist refusal on building a second tunnel, although the two governments can ask for other bids at a later date.
