Plucky teenager Lily Owens is one of the few people in town to take people as they come, happily treating her nursemaid Rosaleen as her equal. When the servant endures a beating at the hands of local bigots and is consigned to a hospital bed with bruises and broken bones, Lily vows to spirit her friend away to a safer place, leaving behind her bullying, hard-drinking father T Ray. Rosaleen and her diminutive companion seek refuge in a neighbouring community, finding lodgings with the Boatwright sisters – August, May and June (Alicia Keys) – who produce some of the state’s finest honey.
