The Metropolitan Opera Live Encore Screening: Adriana Lecouvreur

Anna Netrebko sings the demanding title role in Sir David McVicar’s impassioned staging of Francesco Cilea’s opera based on a play by Eugene Scribe, which was recorded live on the stage of the Lincoln Centre For The Performing Arts in New York under the baton of conductor Gianandrea Noseda. Famed actress Adriana Lecouvreur (Netrebko) prepares to take to the stage in 1730 Paris under the watchful eye of stage manager Michonnet (Ambrogio Maestri). She meets briefly with her lover, soldier Maurizio (Piotr Beczala), unaware that her beau is in fact the Count of Saxony. The lovers agree to meet after Adriana’s performance but Maurizio is diverted to a heated encounter with the Princess de Boullon (Anita Rachvelishvili). The two women become fierce rivals for Maurizio’s love, culminating in tragedy.
