Antonio Pappano conducts Stefan Herheim’s staging of Tchaikovsky’s ambitious opera, which was broadcast live on the stage of the Royal Opera House in London. First performed in St Petersburg in 1890, The Queen Of Spades is set during the reign of Catherine The Great in the 18th century. A soldier called Gherman is deeply in love with a girl, whose name he doesn’t even know. She is, quite literally, in a different class to him but Gherman pines for her regardless.
