More than 20 years after the publication of the first Adverse Childhood Experience Study, director James Redford travels to Lincoln Alternative High School in the rural community of Walla Walla, Washington. Students are given cameras to document their own feelings about the power of one good teacher to improve truancy and poor grades against a backdrop of emotional pain and physical violence.
