Following an altercation with one of the players on his high school American football team, coach Jim White moves to McFarland in California with his family. He takes up a position as a PE teacher at a school with predominantly Hispanic students. During his first week, Jim notices that some of the students are gifted athletes and he persuades Principal Camillo to let him start a cross-country running team, with a view to competing in the forthcoming state championships.
