Davy and older brother Iwan spend a blissful summer’s morning messing around with neighbours Rhys and Robbie. The boys are unaware of martial strife back home. Rhys and Robbie’s mother Anne tells her husband Hywell that she is leaving him for farmer Dai. The enraged spouse retaliates by grabbing his shotgun, just as the four boys return from their escapades. Gunshots ring out and Davy and Iwan’s distraught parents, Glyn and Sandra, offer refuge to the survivors of the tragedy.
