Folke is an employee of the Home Research Institute in Norway, which is dedicated to unravelling the secrets of the perfect kitchen. Having studied the habits of housewives, the researchers turn their attentions to single men, and Folke is sent to document the daily routine of lonely bachelor Isak, who lives on his own in a remote village. At first, Folke merely observes his subject. However, over time, the two men strike up a touching friendship, which seriously compromises the objectivity of Folke's data.
