As the Germans occupy the Polish city of Lvov, sewer worker and opportunist thief Leopold Socha and his young associate Szczepek loot the now vacant residences. Below ground, Leopold stumbles upon a group of Jews cowering in the darkness and he agrees to keep their secret in exchange for money and trinkets. At first, Leopold is driven purely by material gain but as the months pass, he grows emotionally attached to the subterranean escapees.
Sofia is a blind pianist, who leads an independent life with support from friends and neighbours including Veronique, who lives upstairs. One day, Sofia hears a struggle in Veronique’s apartment that leads to the young woman’s death. As the sole witness to the crime, Sofia embarks on a one-woman crusade to uncover the truth. In the process, she crosses paths with Veronique’s distraught father, Zoran Radic. He is a Serbian businessman accused of committing acts of genocide during the Bosnian war.
