It is the third time the Libertines and Babyshambles singer, 32, has been jailed on drug-related charges. He has been convicted of drug charges, but not jailed, a further 12 times.

“You have an appalling record of committed offences of the kind for which you fall to be sentenced today,” said Judge David Radford at Snaresbrook Crown Court today.

This time around, Doherty was arrested on 24 January 2010 during a police investigation into the death of heiress Robyn Whitehead, who had been making a film about the singer.

Defending Doherty in court, Peter Ratliff said: “Any claim that this defendant somehow glamorises drug use is misguided.

“He takes no pleasure in his addiction. It’s one thing he’s said publicly he would not wish upon his worst enemy.”
