We take the existence of the A – Z Street Guide for granted, but the story of its creation is fascinating and rich with human interest. The A – Z of Mrs P recounts the tale in a novel musical setting, and unveils the remarkable truth behind Phyllis Persall's invention of the indispensable and iconic book.
Award-winning singer/composer Gwyneth Herbert (The Sea Cabinet) and playwright Diane Samuels (Kindertransport) guide you along the trail left by Phyllis' footsteps, relating in words, music and song the moving story of how this unique woman faced down her mentor and nemesis to find her own feet, and embraced an entire city.
In 1936, Phyllis Pearsall left her husband in Venice and came to find her way in London. Soon after, she received a telegram from her father, map publisher Alexander Gross.
So began the story of how an eccentric Bohemian artist put down her paints and followed in her beloved but exasperating father's footsteps by mapping an entire city and creating the London A – Z.
The A – Z of Mrs P invites you to follow Phylis and Alexander's journeys as they intersect and diverge through the thoroughfares and alleyways of London. Join them as they scale new heights and seize opportunities to build an iconic business amid the tangled side roads of a troubled family saga.
