Running the big-selling pair close were Adele, Elbowand Scouting for Girls, who gained three nods each for Britain’s most famous music award ceremony, which takes place at Earls Court on 18 February.

The two most nominated acts go up against each other for best British Album and best British Single, the latter of which appears to be the most hotly contested category in this year’s Brits.

For that British Single gong, Coldplay’s Viva La Vida and Duffy’s Mercy face competition from Adele, with Chasing Pavements, Estelle feat. Kanye West for American Boy and Scouting for Girls (Heartbeat) as well as five other strong contenders. One reason for the long list in this section is that it’s the only award to be voted for by the public, via a phone vote on the night.

Some of these nominated acts will appear at the Earls Court do, including Coldplay and Duffy and they’ll be joined by veterans of the music scene such as the Pet Shop Boys, Take That and U2.
