CSS's attitude is apparent straightaway when you hear the meaning of the name. CSS is an abbreviation of Cansei de Ser Sexy: Portuguese for 'tired of being sexy'. The Brazilian group clearly refuses to take itself too seriously; an admirable trait in today's musical world of angular haircuts and men in eyeliner.
The group's desire to make fun music together came long before the ability to play that music had exactly been explored. Always the optimists, their official press release describes their initial inability to play as mere “challenge for creativity”. As it turns out, a challenge for creativity isn't that tough to overcome for a group of mostly designers and artists. They proved to be absolute naturals at crafting the quirky, and at times completely bizarre, synth-driven dance music that has become their trademark. While sentiments like “Let's make love and listen to Death from Above” aren't exactly going to go down in history as amazing poetry, it hardly matters when you're feeling like dancing.
Their live show is more of a party than a concert, really. Lead singer Lovefoxxx (yes, there are three Xs in there) seems to hold the audience in the palm of her hand, as she hypnotically dances across the stage whilst belting out any number of generally overtly sexual lyrics. There's not a lot of subtlety to be had for a band so tired of being sexy.
