|Dickens Theme Park Opens in Kent|
- London's most famous author celebrated in rides and shows
DICKENS WORLD opens today, 25 May. It's a UKP62 million amusement park in Chatham, Kent, based on the famous works of one of Britain and London's most famous writers.
Victorian London is the setting for many of Charles Dickens books, notably A Christmas Carol, Great Expectations, Oliver Twist and Nicholas Nickleby. All four of those novels are given the full treatment at Dickens World.
There's a haunted house stuffed with ghosts from A Christmas Carol, a re-creation of Nicholas Nickleby's school-room, a boat ride through a mock-up of a London sewer, which references Great Expectations and what they call a 4-D show based on Fagin's Den from Oliver.
Great Expectations is partly set in the Chatham area, the place Dickens spent most of his childhood, which explains the setting for the theme park, about an hour by car or train/bus from central London.
Judging by the press attention from across the globe that Dickens World has received – a quick google reveals articles from Australia, Denmark, India and the USA - it should get off to a flyer.
