- Sculpture is part of major revamp plans for West End shopping district
A HALO of light hovering above Oxford Circus is the stand-out feature of the latest plans to revamp the West End.
The circular light sculpture would float some ten metres above the top of buildings, creating a halo effect for what Westminster Council hope will be a heavenly experience for the evening shoppers on Bond, Oxford and Regent Streets below.
"This is a bold, imaginative plan which will help ensure the West End remains the country's premier shopping, dining and entertainment destination," said Sir Simon Milton, leader of Westminster Council.
Milton was also referring to the other elements of the UKP40 million revamp, which include further pedestrianisation of the three-street area and a reduction in bus and taxi traffic.
Meanwhile, at the other end of Oxford Street, east of Centrepoint, there are plans to build a 5,000 seat convention centre, London Mayor Ken Livingstone said today, though he admitted the scheme was at the ideas stage.
