The Royal Festival Hall. Copyright Hayes Davidson/Nick WoodMASSED choirs sailing on a candlelit barge to the South Bank will mark the grand re-opening of the Royal Festival Hall on Friday, with festivities continuing throughout the weekend.

The choirs are to arrive at the RFH at dusk after the barge has left Tower Bridge at 9.20pm

For the two days following, 18,000 performers are set to entertain tens of thousands of visitors in what is known as The Overture, all let in to the multi-million pound revamped venue for free.

"This will be the most ambitious participation weekend we have seen in this country for years," said RFH artistic director Jude Kelly.

"It is an opportunity for artists of all kinds to feel they are the centre of our story."

London Mayor Ken Lvingstne said: "Londoners can once again enjoy this much-loved venue, be it for world-class music, a variety of free events, or simply a cup of tea in the foyer with friends."
