Survey Trashes London's Tourist Treasures
- The Eye, Buckingham Palace and Diana Memorial disappoint visitors says report

Survey Trashes LondonSOME OF LONDON's most famous tourist attractions have come under fire in a new survey of the world's top sights.

The report picked out the Princess Diana Memorial Fountain, the London Eye and Buckingham Palace for particular criticism. According to the survey, the People's Princess's water sculpture was "wet and pointless". On a positive note for the capital, Southwark's Shakespeare's Globe Theatre received praise from the panel of 1,267 visitors.

Other sights in the UK and beyond also came under fire, with Stonehenge ("just a load of old rocks") ranked the country's most disappointing, while Paris's Eiffel Tower was ranked the world's worst attraction. Even Cairo's wondrous Pyramids faced the ire of the critics coming in eighth of the planet's most-disappointing attractions.

Jason Wyer-Smith, a spokesman for Virgin Travel Insurance, who commissioned the research, said: "It seems thousands of Brits are returning from their hard earned holidays feeling a bit let down when famous tourist spots don't live up to expectation. The key to hidden holiday heaven could well be seeking out the hidden gems rather than joining the crowds in holiday hell."

Unsurprisingly the findings have sparked a bitter response from both those targeted and many travel experts.

Writer Bill Bryson said of Stonehenge's inclusion in the list: "There's no doubt that it isn't as spectacular as people often think it's going to be," he said. "But I have completely warmed to Stonehenge over the years. Once you adjust to the fact that it's completely inert and not overwhelming in scale it's quite magical."

He told The Guardian that he thought the Diana memorial was 'terrific' and added that The Eiffel Tower is a 'great and exciting structure'.

Ten UK suggestions promising not to disappoint are:
1) Alnwick Castle, Northumberland
2) Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, County Antrim
3) The Royal Crescent, Bath
4) Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, Southwark, London
5) The Backs, Cambridge
