|Heathrow Protesters Set Up Camp|
- Campaign against another runway and terminal gathers pace
THOUSANDS of protesters are on their way to Heathrow to join the hundreds already at the Camp for Climate Action who are there to campaign against the extension of the airport.
The camp is just outside the airport's northern edge, near to the site of Heathrow's proposed third runway and sixth terminal.
Though the main thrust of the protest is to do with climate change, it also encompasses the concerns of some local people who fear the extension would mean the destruction of their homes.
The protesters camp is set to increase in size over the next few days in a build-up to a weekend of direct action on what is usually one of the airports busiest periods. Airport operators British Airports Authority have raised fears that protests could lead inconvenience passengers, but this has been denied by protest groups.
"We're not here to try to disrupt passengers, we're here to try to disrupt BAA," said a spokesperson for the CCA.
Nevertheless, BAA and the police are taking few chances. Police have already stopped and searched protesters arriving at the site under anti-terrorism laws and thousands of officers are being used to block any attempts at air traffic disruption.
