Buckingham Palace Goes Up in Lights
- New scheme to brighten up The Mall at night time

Buckingham Palace Goes Up in Lights, photo courtesy PATHE QUEEN has consented to let lights shine on Buckingham Palace during the night.

59 lights will be supplied by Dutch company Philips for the project, which will feature coloured spotlights aimed at Buckingham Palace's three portico columns.

The idea is that the lights will attract tourists up The Mall during winter evenings. Until now, the area has often appeared to be dull once the sun goes down and some visitors have even got lost trying to locate the palace.

Predictably, the scheme has drawn fire from environmental groups, who worry about the increased electricity needed.

"These lights are going to blaze away until the end of her reign," said a Greenpeace spokesperson, "probably long enough to see the catastrophic effects of climate change strike our country and the wider world."

Supporters of the project point out that LED lights are to be used, which use considerably less energy than conventional lights.
