Outdoor Smoking Ban on the Cards for West End
- Council worried about noise levels on city streets

Outdoor Smoking Ban on the Cards for West EndSMOKING could be banned outside, as well as inside, West End bars and restaurants from next year.

Westminster Council, the local authority which covers the area, is looking to augment the upcoming nationwide ban on smoking at indoor public places with its own extra ban on people trying to take a puff in the open air.

The council points to the increase in noise levels likely from packs of smokers hanging around on pavements for its intended ban.

"There are already problems caused by people standing outside drinking and creating considerable noise for neighbours," said Councillor Audrey Lewis.

"We are anxious to avoid this being greatly increased by smokers. We don't want to find substantial numbers of them congregating outside where there is the likelihood of extra work for the police."
