|Have a Lie-In and Miss Out on Olympic Jobs, Warns Mayor|
- Londoners said to be sleep-walking through opportunities
EAST-LONDONERS won't get the jobs created by building for the Olympics, because "they haven't got the skills, haven't got the training, can't afford to lose the benefits and won't come in for work even at 11 o'clock," says the Mayor for the area.
Sir Robin Wales, Labour Mayor of Newham borough, has denied he called his electors "idle" or "lazy", as some reports have suggested, but his comments have nevertheless caused a rumpus.
Wales says his intention was to help local people get motivated for the jobs boom and not get left behind.
"No one in Newham can assume they will be first in line for jobs and opportunities," cautioned Wales. "We have to show that we have the skills and the energy to rise to grasp the opportunities that the Games will bring."
