Birthday Present Promotion for Charles
- Army, navy and air force honour Prince of Wales

The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall visit the Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Flower Show 2006. Photo by Michael CrabtreePRINCE CHARLES has been promoted by all three branches of the military as a 58th birthday present.

Now the heir to the throne is an Air Chief Marshal, a General and an Admiral, where before today he was only Air Marshal, Lieutenant General and Vice-Admiral.

Charles hasn't been seen in active service for 30 years, but this is no handicap to promotion.

The services' attitude seems to be that the Prince should receive promotions on the basis of what he rank he would have attained if still a professional.

"It is right that Prince Charles has the same rank as his peer group," said a spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence. "This has happened throughout the Prince of Wales's career."

Also common throughout the Prince's career has been a commitment to appear at a succession of events and sites throughout the land, from the Chelsea Flower Show (pictured) to today's visit to Poundbury in Dorset and to Wales, where he will spend the rest of this week.
