|Rank and File ‘Have No Confidence’ in Met Chief|
- Sir Ian Blair under the cosh at police conference
METROPOLITAN Police Chief Sir Ian Blair is in serious trouble after the leader of the force’s constables, its rank-and-file, said he had no confidence in his boss.
"There is deepening discontent within my organisation," said Detective Constable Peter Smyth, speaking yesterday at the annual conference of the Police Federation. "We have no confidence in this commissioner."
Smyth pointed to a number of high-profile blunders made by Blair including the taping of phone conversations with ministers and Blair’s handling of the summary execution of Jean Charles de Menezes, who was suspected of being a suicide bomber, but was innocent.
Smyth asked the government’s Police Minister, Liam Byrne, to do something about the lack of confidence, a pretty blatant call for Blair’s removal from office.
However, Blair enjoys considerable political support, both locally and nationally. London Mayor Ken Livingstone is a fan. One of his consultants on the police, Lee Jasper, said Blair was doing a "first class job." Byrne said: "There is strong leadership in the Met."
An investigation into the de Menezes shooting is pending and it is likely any serious criticism of the Commissioner will see his departure from the job.
