- Bengali New Year celebrations grow into ninth year extravaganza

Mela Welcomes Food Festival to Brick LaneBRICK LANE plays host to the annual Baishakhi Mela this Sunday (14th May), a Bengali New Year extravaganza now in its ninth year in London.

Close to 100,000 visitors are expected to taste the sounds and flavours of Bengali culture, making the Baishakhi Mela the biggest such celebration outside of Bangladesh.

Highlights of the festival, which features artists and performers both traditional and modern, include bridal rides, bhangra music displays and, new for this year, Brick Lane itself, which will be pedestrianised for the event and have a food festival with star chefs and street cafes.

Other venues for the Baishakhi Mela are Weavers Field and Allen Gardens. The celebrations go from 11.00 am until 7.00 pm. Shubho Nobo Borsho.
