Mayor Told to Raise Congestion Charge to Twenty Pounds
- New variable rate for gas-guzzlers would raise money for other transport schemes

Mayor Told to Raise Congestion Charge to Twenty Pounds (Picture: Copyright Transport for London 2005)OWNERS of cars that use lots of petrol should pay a Congestion Charge of UKP20, according to an environmental group, who will hand in a petition on the issue to the Mayor today.

Despite its name, the Alliance Against Urban 4x4s think all cars producing well above the average emissions should pay the increased charge and the money raised spent on other transport projects.

"Many other gas-guzzlers are equally polluting, even if they don't pose the same safety hazards,” said Sian Berry of the AAU4, “so we have proposed a simple system of charging cars a higher rate according to their carbon dioxide emissions."

London mayor Ken Livingstone has previously emoted against 4x4s, so it could be that the AAU4 are pushing at an open door. The group estimate that the new Congestion Charge - UKP12 higher than that for normal cars - would raise UKP34 million a year, over and above the costs of administering the variable CC rate.
