Big Ben Bell Silenced
- Fourth-quarter ring taken out of service for essential repair work

Big Ben Bell Silenced QUARTER-HOUR fans in Westminster are in mourning today after one of the Big Ben bells stopped chiming the 15 minute mark.

Maintenance work is the reason for the halt in the fourth-quarter bell’s comforting ding-dong, ding-dong, the first such repair in over 40 years.

The work is scheduled to last for the next month and is being conducted by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry, which has worked on the St Stephen’s Tower bells for nearly 150 years.

The main hourly bell – Big Ben proper - will continue to chime. There is said to be no truth in the rumour that the maintenance work is being conducted in time for a possible England triumph in the forthcoming World Cup and subsequent celebratory bell-ringing.
