|Top Of The Pops Bows Out|
- Veteran music show calls it a day after 43 years
THE TV show we love to hate - Top Of The Pops - was recorded for the final time in London this week and will be shown this Sunday, 30 July.
The last edition was fronted by Sir Jimmy Saville - the cigar toting king of cheese - who presented the first edition. Acts featured on the special include The Rolling Stones, The Spice Girls, Wham, Madonna, Beyonce Knowles and Robbie Williams. The Stones were the first act on the first show in the 60s.
"Most shows don't last 42 days - we lasted 42 years," he said. "You can only feel incredibly proud" Saville told the BBC's breakfast show.
Music lovers remained divided about the programme's influence on popular culture throughout the its record breaking run. The Clash were among many artists who refused to appear on the show, leading to one its most bizarre moments when girl dance troupe Legs & Co gyrated along to the band's single Bank Robber in 1980.
