Livingstone Fans 'Ring of Fire' Flames
- Mayor aims to battle government plans for waste incineration

Livingstone Fans KEN LIVINGSTONE is to fight government plans to build Europe's biggest waste incinerator in south-east London.

"The decision to give the green light to an incinerator at Bexley undermines our battle against climate change and is not in the best interests of London as a whole," said the London mayor.

"Thousands of tonnes of London's rubbish, which could be recycled or turned into renewable gas will instead be burnt."

The government have over-ridden objections to the planned incinerator from both the mayor and Bexley council, the local authority involved, but Livingstone hopes to take the case to judicial review.

"Unless the government reviews its position, London will be surrounded by a ring of fire, as boroughs opt only for burning over recycling and new energy from waste technologies."

For the government, Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks said the waste burned by the incinerator would otherwise be dumped in landfill sites in the countryside, which was the worse environmental option.
