|Dead Manís Chest Breaks Box Office Records|
- Pirates II draws huge crowds to Londonís cinemas
CINEMAS all over London were sold out and packed out over the weekend as crowds flocked to see Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Manís Chest.
Early figures suggest the follow-up to Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl has broken the record for money taken by a movie on the opening Thursday of its release.
Across the UK, the film starring Johnny Depp and Keira Knightley took UKP2.3 million last Thursday, beating rival recent blockbusters Spider-Man 2 (UKP1.57 million) and X-Men 3 (UKP1.02million) into silver and bronze spots.
The film also did the business in the US, taking USD45 million on its first Friday, a record. Industry experts expect it to beat the first Spidermanís weekend record of USD115 million, set in 2002.
The reviews for the second Pirates havenít been quite as glowing as those for the first, but the publicity generated has been such that this hasnít mattered and the filmís makers were clearly confident of success ahead of time, as revealed by their decision to ignore the usual blockbuster rules for a conventional wrap-it-all-up ending.
A third Pirates film, featuring Rolling Stone Keith Richards, is due out next year.
