|Trafalgar Square Celebration of Olympic Win|
- Anniversary of famous victory over Madrid, New York and Paris held today
ONE YEAR to the day since London won the race to host the 2012 Olympic Games, Trafalgar Square is the site of a party to celebrate the fact, with thousands of people set to attend.
Dame Kelly Holmes, the gold-medal-winning star of the British team at the last Olympics in Athens, and other stars are to attend the event, which is part of a national road-show designed to drum up publicity for the games, albeit six years ahead of time.
The celebrations come on a day when two reports have cast a bit of a shadow over the Olympics. The first, by the European Tour Operators Association, argues that instead of boosting tourism, as many have claimed, the games are more likely to put off tourists, especially those who have little interest in sport.
The second report, in The Times today, concentrates on the financial side of the Olympics and suggests that the development costs are set to over-run by UKP1.5 billion. On the plus side, this doesn’t come out of the Olympics pot itself, but out of government funds earmarked for the redevelopment of east London.
