Tube Could Be Closed by Heatwaves
- ‘You reach a point where you could face the prospect of loss of life,’ says Livingstone

Tube Could Be Closed by Heatwaves. Copyright Transport for London 2005HEATWAVES like the one we’re in at the moment could force the Tube to close down in the future, according to Ken Livingstone.

"We might face, in a few years time, having to shut some Tube lines on particularly hot days just because it won't be safe," said the London Mayor.

"You reach a point where the underground will become literally intolerable and you could face the prospect of loss of life."

Where that point might come is the issue.

Livingstone said that as long as the predictions of climate experts are correct, the Tube will be able to cope with hotter temperatures thanks to a new cooling system to be introduced. But, "if the temperature goes up faster than we fear it's going to," Tube lines would face closure, the Mayor said.

The cooling system aims to use groundwater pumped up through stations to keep down the temperature, but is still at the testing stage.
