|Johnny Depp Brings Weirdness to Leicester Square|
- Captain Jack leads cast at London premiere of Pirates of the Caribbean II
JOHNNY DEPP, Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom are all coming to the Odeon Leicester Square this evening for the London premiere of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.
The second film in the Pirates of the Caribbean series – there will be another one along next year – Dead Man’s Chest will have to go some to match the success of its predecessor which struck box office gold and Oscar-winning recognition.
Depp acknowledges the problem of sequels, but says that "millions of kids are getting a kick out of watching this oddball character," which, for him is justification enough.
"I was given the 'weird' badge but I think everybody's weird and that's the key to it," said Depp. "We all have idiosyncrasies, tics that are obsessive-compulsive. People do themselves a great disservice by not allowing themselves to see who they really are because they are afraid."
Depp’s weird character, Captain Jack Sparrow, was the making of the first film, though the actor had to argue his case with film company Disney, who favoured a more mainstream pirate.
The challenge for Depp was to sustain his character’s idiosyncrasies and tics while retaining the spontaneity that characterised the first film. Soon enough, we’ll all find out if he’s managed that task.
