Simon Hughes: Yes, I am GaySimon Hughes: Yes, I am Gay
- Leading LibDem MP finally admits sexuality

BERMONDSEY MP Simon Hughes, a candidate to become the leader of the Liberal Democrats, has come out of the closet.

“I am perfectly willing to say that I have had both homosexual and heterosexual relationships in the past," said Hughes, once a candidate for the London Mayor job.

These days being a gay politician is not seen as such a handicap as it was in times past, but Hughes’s case is a bit special since he first became an MP partly on the back of a vile, homophobic campaign against his opponent, gay activist Peter Tatchell.

That was back in 1983 and since then there have been many rumours about Hughes’s sexuality, rumours that Hughes has always, until now, strenuously denied. Even last week, Hughes told one newspaper, when asked if he was gay: “The answer is no, as it happens, but if it was the case, which it isn’t, I hope that would not become an issue.”

For LibDem voters, the issue isn’t likely to be Hughes’s sexuality as such, but his evident dishonesty.
