|More Tube Strikes on the Cards|
- Unions to vote on 'unsafe systems'
THE PROSPECT of further strikes by Tube station staff looms after London Underground management and unions drew different conclusions from today’s action by the Rail, Maritime and Transport union.
For the management side, the one-day strike has so far been a straightforward failure. "It has had a little impact on London Underground services," said an LU spokesperson. "At the height of the morning peak less than 10 per cent of stations were closed due to industrial action."
However, the means used to keep the network going look to have added another layer to the argument: "We will be balloting all London Underground staff on the basis that LU is prepared to use unsafe systems in order to defeat the strike. This is unacceptable," said an RMT spokesperson.
The initial dispute is based on a agreement signed last year for a shorter working week, with the two sides now arguing over the small print of staff re-organisation implied by the agreement.
