- McGowan’s crawl to Canterbury past half-way

MARK McGOWAN, the Peckham-based performance artist, is over the half-way mark in his latest stunt - crawling the 60 miles from London to Canterbury towing 189 boxes of chocolates with a sign reading "could you love me?" on his back.

"The A20 is a long and lonely road and I am absolutely shattered," said McGowan. "My chocolate boxes are in pieces, my suit is filthy and the rose I am carrying between my teeth is somewhat chewed up."

The aim of the stunt, started on Boxing Day, is to highlight loneliness, a problem that McGowan says is worse at Christmas time.

"You get by being on your own the rest of the year but at this time it is devastation, utter misery," said the modern-day pilgrim. "I am looking for love because I have had enough - I don't want to be alone any more."
