- Ang Lee the victor as Clooney and other favoured Brits are left trophy-less
BROKEBACK Mountain was the big winner at this year’s Bafta Award ceremony, held in London last night.
Ang Lee’s beautiful film about two men struggling to come to terms with their homosexuality in the American west won four Baftas, including the two main awards of Best Film and Best Director.
“When we started making the movie we thought it was going to be a small precious film, now it's a big precious film,” said Lee. “I'm not saying the British are smarter but I feel very committed to them.”
That was a slightly toadying response to his awards and a bit unfair on Americans, too, given the film’s success in award ceremonies in the US and its likely haul at the upcoming Oscars.
The big losers were those nominated for their work in The Constant Gardener and George Clooney. The former took only one Bafta after being nominated for ten and Clooney walked away empty handed, a state of affairs that riled Fellowship inductee Lord Puttnam. “I'm sorry that Clooney didn't win best director because of what he put himself through,” said Puttnam.
