- MPs vote on cigarette ban for pubs and clubs

A free vote held today by Members of Parliament will decide whether to ban smoking in all pubs and clubs in England.

The proposed ban is one of three options in the Health Bill. It was offered after several Labour backbenchers protested against the original plans which excluded from the ban pubs not serving food.

Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt, who will vote for a blanket ban in pubs, says she remains undecided about whether to back an exception for private clubs.

Also proposed in the Health Bill is the option to allow ministers the right to raise the minimum cigarette-buying age from 16 to 18.
