- Multi-million pound project starts today

CHINATOWN begins a new era today as a number of projects get underway that improve its streets and expand its area.

Pavements, roads, street lighting and street furniture will all be revamped at the cost of some UKP1.6 million, with the final piece in the jigsaw - a new gate to the area - arriving soon.

The position of the new gate on Wardour Street rather than the current Gerrard Street is testament to the growing role of Chinatown in the West End.

“The geographical position of the arch is recognition of the expansion of Chinatown into the south side of Wardour Street,” said Councillor Simon Milton, leader of Westminster City Council.

“It will entice many of the thousands of people who go into Leicester Square to explore the wonders of Chinatown.”
