Carnival to Conquer Hyde Park
- Mayor and organisers plan longer route

Carnival to Conquer Hyde ParkNOTTING HILL Carnival is set to be expanded into Hyde Park next year.

For two years, Hyde Park has hosted the Caribbean Showcase on the same August Bank Holiday used by the nearby Carnival.

The brainchild of London Mayor Ken Livingstone, the Showcase was initially seen by some Carnival stalwarts as a threat to its traditions, but now Livingstone appears to have the support of Carnival organisers.

"We have made it very clear to the mayor's office that we would like to do it," said Professor Chris Mullard, chairman of Notting Hill Carnival Limited.

Discussion is now to take place over the cost implications and the route leading to Hyde Park. The NHCL is determined that the usual route should not be compromised and that the Hype Park section should be an add-on rather than a replacement.
