| Johnny Depp Lands Sweeney Todd Role - Pirates star to play Demon Barber of Fleet Street in musical JOHNNY DEPP is to play mythical London barber Sweeney Todd in a new film version of the tale about a late 18th century murderer, this time based on the Stephen Sondheim stage show.Originally performed on Broadway in 1979, the musical claimed eight Tony Awards and later transferred to the London stage. The story of the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, who cut his customers throats instead of their hair and gave his victims’ innards to his neighbour to cook in pies, has been told and re-told in written form and on both stage and screen many times. Depp has a history of playing odd characters, most recently in the two Pirates of the Caribbean films, but also Edward Scissorhands and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, both of which were directed by Tim Burton, who is set to direct Sweeny Todd. Sweeney Todd is due to be filmed and released next year. |
