1.00am Tube Trains By Next Year
- Mayor unveils weekend late-running scheme

1.00am Tube Trains By Next Year: (c) Transport for London 2005LATE-NIGHT Tube trains will start running on weekends from May 2007.

After a consultation exercise involving over 50,000 people, Mayor Ken Livingstone has come up with a plan for trains to run half an hour later than currently on Friday and Saturday nights.

That will mean last Tube trains leaving central London at 1.00am, rather than 12.30. The Mayor had originally wanted to extend the times by at least an hour, but that would have meant starting the system an hour later in the mornings, adversely affecting weekend workers.

"A significant minority rely on the Underground to get to work early on Saturday and Sunday mornings," said Livingstone.

"This package ensures the Tube runs later on Friday and Saturday nights whilst protecting the needs of early morning commuters."

Tune unions, whose members would have to change shift patterns, have said they donít support the scheme, but it is unclear what action they plan to take.
