Blair Wants More Overseas Students BRITAIN’S universities plan to welcome at least 100,000 extra overseas students over the next five years, Prime Minister Tony Blair is to reveal today.

Already, there are 300,000 foreigners studying in further education in the UK, many of them in London. The University of Greenwich is one of the leaders of the pack with some 3,000 overseas students.

“Students from around the world who study in the UK will benefit from a long tradition of high quality education with intensive, well-taught courses,” said Baroness Blackstone, vice-chancellor of the University of Greenwich.

Government experts say overseas students bring in around UKP10 billion to the national economy every year in fees and other spending, a figure which would be expected to increase by 25 per cent if Blair’s plans come off. If correct, those figures make the UKP27 million earmarked
