Choc-tastic Remedy Found for Coughs
- London scientists uncover benefits of chocolate

EAT chocolate to stop coughing - that's the happy message that has emerged from research conducted at London's Imperial College.

Chocolate contains the ingredient theobromine, which scientists at Imperial say is more effective as a cough treatment than codeine, one of the most common ingredients used in over-the-counter medicines.

Imperial studied three groups of coughing patients; one group was given theobromine, another codeine and a third a placebo. Theobromine scored 30 per cent better than codeine in suppressing coughs while codeine was only marginally better than the placebo.

Theobromine has other advantages over codeine and other treatments - it has no known adverse side-effects and does not cause drowsiness, so it can be taken in bigger doses.

The research is likely to lead to future medicines that feature theobromine. Until then sufferers will have to put up with eating as much chocolate as they can to stifle their irritating coughs.
