Police Target Festive Thugs
- Tube staff at central stations get present of more protection

POLICE are to beef up efforts to control unruly drunks roaming the Tube system during the festive season.

"We like to see people enjoying themselves but by the same token, assaults on LU [London Underground] staff increase at this time of the year," said Andy Ball of the British Transport Police. "A festive drink is not an excuse for such behaviour."

In an effort to concentrate their resources more effectively, the police and London Underground have produced a top ten of the worst stations for boorish behaviour, with Waterloo at number one seemingly well-deserving of its battle ground name.

Waterloo saw 29 serious drink-related incidents involving staff in the festive season last year, three ahead of Oxford Circus which suffered 26. Leicester Square was third worst with 25.

"Some patrols will concentrate on these West End stations and others on the trains running between them," said Ball. As back-up, there is to be a poster campaign warning revellers of the perils of drink both to themselves and to others.
