|New Year to Start With a Bang
- Fireworks and free transport on offer for last night party
PLANS for the public celebration of New Year's Eve have been finalised, with Mayor Ken Livingstone stumping up UKP1.2 million for a fireworks-centred event.
The ten-minute light-spectacular will be centred on the Thames where fireworks will be sent to the sky from barges at midnight on the 31st. An official viewing area at Victoria Embankment is to hold up to 50,000 onlookers, but Livingstone is keen to stress that the show can be seen by other means.
"It is easy to watch it on TV or the screens we will have in Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square," said Livingstone. "If you all crowd into one space, once you get to 50,000 people, you have to start turning people away."
All night free transport from central London in the form of tubes and buses is being provided this year, with sponsorship help from beer company Fosters.
