Poppins Takes Off to Standing Ovation
- New musical gets thumbs up from theatre crowd

MARY POPPINS won a ten-minute standing ovation from its first night audience as the technical troubles of getting the magic nanny to fly were ironed out.

Laura Michelle Kelly, as Mary Poppins, flies above the stage to great effect in the much-heralded stage show version of the legendary children's book and film. The trick was pulled-off with aplomb last night after proving difficult to perform during previews. But she's not the only one to defy gravity, as Gavin Lee, playing chimney-sweep Bert, executes an extraordinary dance that finishes with him completing his steps upside down high in the air. The UKP9 million show, directed by Richard Eyre and produced by Sir Cameron Mackinstosh, is now expected to become one of the big hits of the London stage.
